If you clicked on this blog, you probably already know this, but the Georgia Institute of Technology is a public research university and institute of technology in Atlanta, Georgia. You also probably know that Georgia Tech is very hard to get into (at least we hope we aren’t the ones breaking the news). their acceptance rate was 28% for Georgia residents, 9% for nonresidents. To get in, you need to be an elite candidate, especially if you are an out-of-state student or looking at popular programs. Thankfully, we can help. While we highly recommend working with a professional if you are applying to competitive schools like Georgia Tech, we wanted to also share some of our tips and tricks for writing They keep it pretty simple; they only ask one 300-word max essay question.

Why do you want to study your chosen major, and why do you want to study that major at Georgia Tech?

Our biggest tip here is don’t be undecided or wishy-washy about what you want to study. GT is especially noted for its engineering programs, but it also has a ton of great STEM programs. You really need to choose one. Ideally, that choice comes from a strategic, informed decision. If you aren’t sure which major to choose, we can help.

When we start working with freshmen and sophomores, we put a lot of work into choosing majors, strategizing, and building resumes that reflect the right academic interests to ace this kind of question. Your activities, classes, and academic programs should tell a story, and that story should make it clear what you want to study. Ideally, this story is something you have built and developed over time. This is really the kind of student and application that GT is looking for.

Once you know your major, the next step is research. You will need to know as much as you can about the program and other academic opportunities offered by Georgia Tech. Don’t skimp on the research; the more you know, the easier this essay will be to write.

After you have become an expert in all things GT, this essay has two main parts. The first part is a short story about how you fell in love with the subject you hope to major in. For example, one of our past students hoped to study Industrial Design, and she wrote about building a bridge for her 8th-grade independent science project. Another student who wanted to pursue computer science wrote about how writing the code for his robotics team pushed him to teach himself Python and Java. Tell your story and finish that story by stating what you hope to major in at GT.

Then it’s time to show your knowledge of the school. Generally, we recommend writing about at least two higher-level classes and a professor. Other opportunities are also great to speak to, but just make sure they are specific to GT.  

For each opportunity, you want to show the overlap between the opportunity and your interests/experiences. For example, our computer science student wrote about an Introduction to Perception and Robotics class and connected it to autonomous robot navigation he was working on for his Science Olympiad team. Our industrial design student wrote about working with Dr. Hyunjoo Oh and connected his CoDe craft research to her materials testing research.

This essay should make it clear that GT is the place for you and that you would be an asset to the school.
